Our Mission

Opelika School Library Media Plan for the 21st Century Learner expresses the mission of Alabama’s library media programs as supporting the school’s instructional program to improve student learning and student achievement. This mission is accomplished by:

• Ensuring learners can independently inquire, think critically, and gain, create, and share knowledge. 
• Providing real and virtual access to appropriate, high-quality resources and services during the school day.
• Participating in curriculum development and design of learning activities.
• Facilitating professional development for the learning community.

Our Philosophy

The educational philosophy upheld by the Board of Education of the Opelika City Schools asserts that freedom and representative democracy depend on enlightened citizens.  The school programs are designed to provide opportunities for each youth to become an enlightened citizen, thereby learning to live creatively, efficiently, and responsibly with the ability to make intelligent judgments in daily life.  The home and community must share with the school the responsibility for developing students' varying abilities and interests.

The library media center endeavors to function as the hub of the school.  It is a laboratory for curriculum support and for students and teachers to browse and pursue their special interests and needs using a variety of multimedia.  The collection provides for many kinds of individual interests and varying abilities.

Library media specialists are teachers and resource persons with specialized training and knowledge of materials.  They assist students and teachers in locating and using materials that are most appropriate to their needs.  Library media specialists provide educational opportunities that help students achieve intellectual, physical, psychological, social, and ethical growth, which will perpetuate our freedom and representative democracy.
