Opelika High School Philanthropy 101 Students Award $12,600 to Local Nonprofits

Opelika High School students recently celebrated the impact of giving back through the school’s Philanthropy 101 program, sponsored by the Samford-Cannon Foundation.
The program held its presentation ceremony on June 18, 2026, at the Nonprofit Center of East Alabama. During the ceremony, students presented a total of $12,600 to nine local nonprofit organizations: Greater Peace Child Development Center, Boxcar, Lee County Literacy Coalition, Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama, Storybook Farm, Village Friends, O Grows, Miracle League and Big House Foundation.
Eighteen Opelika High School students participated in the three-week program, which teaches students about the importance of philanthropy, service and community impact. Through the experience, students had the opportunity to learn more about local needs, nonprofit work and the role giving can play in strengthening a community.
Opelika City Schools is grateful to Ms. Lucinda Cannon, Race and Heather Cannon, and the Samford-Cannon Foundation for sponsoring this meaningful program. The district also extends appreciation to Samantha Shipman and Samuel Cleveland from Opelika High School for serving as advisors.
