Investing in the Future: Major Renovations at Two Opelika Schools
Major renovations are in progress at West Forest Intermediate School and Southview Primary School, bringing long-awaited facility upgrades to both campuses ahead of the 2025–2026 school year. These projects were approved by the Opelika City Schools Board of Education during its regularly scheduled meeting on March 27, 2025.
These campuses have not undergone any major renovations or structural facelifts since they were originally built in the 1980s. The current upgrades represent a significant and long-overdue investment in the physical learning environment for over 1,000 students.
At Southview Primary School, Principal Dr. Mary Salmon, who began her career there 25 years ago, shared, “It shows that we are investing in the people who make our school what it is: our faculty, staff, parents, and students. Improved facilities not only create a better learning environment but also help boost morale, safety, and pride within the school community.”
While the school will still retain its familiar feel, the renovations will bring a fresh and uplifting atmosphere to the campus.
“I’m looking forward to walls that proudly reflect Opelika’s school colors, flooring that is cleaner and more durable, and restrooms that are no longer 35 years old. These updates reflect the high standards that have always defined our school and will help our students feel proud, supported, and inspired to do their best,” she said.
At West Forest Intermediate School, Principal Mrs. Ryan McDonald expressed a similar sense of pride and anticipation, “This renovation is going to give us a fresh update and add to our school spirit. It will motivate children and teachers to put their best foot forward every day. I can’t wait to see my teachers’ and our children’s faces when they return to school!”
